Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards was a preacher around the Salem Massachusetts witch trials of 1692, begging people to come to the church, and instead of telling the people to come repent, he threatened them, preaching what all would happen to them if they did not Love God. There is a Movie called The Crucible, and it is a movie where a village is hiding from witchcraft. A group of girls in the village want to play with witchcraft, and when they get caught, they start to freak out, because the punishment for being caught in witchcraft, was death. They started blaming other people, begging the judges that they were being forced, and being Possessed by men. At the very end, a man, one of the main characters, is accused of witchcraft, and he must make a choice of either giving up, and posting his entire name in the town to be shunned, or to be killed. I won't give the ending away, but I will just say that it was a very interesting movie, and I learned so much about that time. Here is a part of Jonathan Edward's Sermon from his speech 'From the Hands of The Sinners', a perfect example showing his threats of what will happen to them, the threats to keep them in his church.

"The bow of wrath is bent, arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it's nothing but mere pleasure of anger, without any promise or obligation at all that keeps the arrow one moment from being made drunk with your blood."

  1. Salem witchcraft trials 1692, Jonathan Edwards born 1703. This makes no sense, he was not even born.

  3. So, I'm interested in how this occurred before he was born, unless we are thinking of a different Jonathan Edwards. Judging by your citation of his sermon, which you incorrectly named, it's actually called "Sinners In The Hands of An Angry God". It also wasn't a threat, it was Edwards explaining the truths of the Bible and asserting that He was threatening people to stay in his church is demonstrably false. I have moral objections to the Salem Witch Trials, however, your characterization isn't helping that cause when you're blatantly lying about someone who wasn't alive when it happened. Perhaps you're thinking of John Proctor who was played by Daniel Day-Lewis? I haven't seen that movie in a while, but that is the only way I can think of this making sense at all.

  4. Jonathan Edwards was my ancestor and he had nothing to do with these trials. Get your facts straight before you put stuff like this out there.

  5. You should take this down and save yourself the embarrassment.
